Good schmutz aka things I found and love
The best Frasier account out there + Mum's Day bonus.
Every fashion/decor/shopping publication has some version of “finds!” or “picks!” I’m trying to figure out a more unique way to say this, so for now I just have “schmutz” (aka yiddish for dirt/filth) which I don’t love, so if you have any ideas, leave ‘em in the comments.
Read to the end for a bonus “Mother’s Day” “gift guide” aka “finds” that I want but I won’t ever buy for myself.
THE #1 TOP FIND/SCHMUTZ:
Amazing new(ish) IG account: @frasierinteriors. The author of this account is the ultimate sleuth, ID-ing even the most background of props on Frasier. (Those of you who don’t know me: Frasier is my religion/love language.)
This account is a great reminder of vast wealth of TV production in the ‘90s. There’s no Amazon-equivalent buys for even minor props, nary a Pottery Barn club chair in sight. Even the chairs in the KACL meeting room are Mies. I was so impressed with this account that I had to reach out:
Expect to see big things from this mysterious talent.
#2:
There should be a word for things that are not a “trend” but should be. Case in point, this tiling by Australian firm YSG should be…something. Kind of reminiscent of Mexican/Portuguese/Spanish tile stylings that look like rugs (sorry, here at Schmatta we have no advanced degrees in design, so I do not know that term).
#3
Amazing French kids’ pedal car I found on a Tumblr post from lord knows when:
#4
Boy Room! Probably old news for any of you NYT Styles obsessives or
devotees. (Hi, me! And pay for Emily’s newsletter…it is worth every penny). This TikTok show explores the fascinating subtext (or really lack thereof) held within the bedrooms of twentysomething boys in NYC.#5
The only thing from Salone that I can’t stop looking at. Are they stools? are they lamps? All I know is I have a strange desire to eat them.
#5
Another Salone-kinda thing. I spotted this rug on the IG story of a ~CeLeBRiTY~ designer in Milan for Salone. He hadn’t tagged the hotel but my internet sleuthing (aka clicking on SEOSEOSEO links for “best Milan hotels”) tracked it down within 10 minutes. It’s from the Portrait Milano (owned by Ferragamo apparently). I don’t know what it is about this rug…I think it reminds me of something from my childhood…like it could have belonged in the art deco Central Park West apartment of my great-grandparents. I emailed the hotel to find out who makes it. (It is likely Michele Bonan, who did the interiors, although I cannot find this rug in their catalog.)
I couldn’t find anything close to the color or quality via googling “green rug white stripe/border” but it did lead me to this pretty amazing rug on 1stdibs. My birthday is in August, should you feel so inclined.
#6
New &tradition lamp. Comes in blue/green or burgundy/orange. Not much to say; I just like it.
#7
The greatest garage door I’ve ever seen. It’s in Brussels, and that’s all I know.
#8
I’m loving this Italian villa featured in World of Interiors by Studio Luca Guadagnio.
It is “high end rich people” design, but done in a way that feels very fun and non-serious. (My favorite kind of design.)
BONUS: M-DAY SHMUTZ
Let’s be honest. Mother’s Day is weird. It’s “tacky gift” occasion or “obligatory last minute flowers” day. That said, being a m-o-m is so hard. So much sacrifice. Any dollars go toward my daughter. Even my dad once sent me some money to buy some new stuff for myself, and I just couldn’t. Spending on yourself feels so useless (especially when you are unemployed which I STILL AM AHHHHHH!!!) until situations get so sad and dire that you have to. Ex: I only JUST threw out all my two year-plus-old maternity underwear (which were ratty and had turned into “loose-fit-not-in-a-good-way” panties) to buy two new packs of Hanes at Target.
Here’s some stuff:
Nordic Knots Loops Rug (9x12), $2,995. Wanted it for a while. But I also want the Milan hotel rug. Either way, I might need to get a new couch to go with.
R13 Cropped Wide Leg Jean, $565. Ridiculous price for jeans that I LOVE but will probably laugh at in two years.
L’Agence Ressi Fitted Tee, $95. I aspire to be the kind of woman who only wears $100 tees.
This Clare V top ($125) and skirt ($165) says “cool mom.” Not sure I could pull this off but one can dream.
Also, Clare V Poche, $195.
Este Ceramiche Plate Set, $230. To assuage my Hawkins plate meltdown.
Goyard Belvedere Bag, $oh thousands. One day…one day.
Ta-ta for now!
